Historic manor house in England

Stokesay Court is an impressive historic manor house near Craven Arms, England, known for its magnificent architecture, picturesque surroundings, and rich history. Victorian architecture in gardens

History of Stokesay Court
The manor was built between 1889 and 1892 by Thomas Harris, a wealthy industrialist who intended it to be a family residence. Harris commissioned architect Thomas Mainwaring Penson, who designed the building in the typical neogothic and neo-Jacobean style. The construction was advanced for its time and included some of the most modern technologies of the Victorian era, such as an early form of central heating and innovative water supply.

Stokesay Court filming location movies

During World War I, Stokesay Court was converted into a hospital for wounded soldiers. It served as a recuperation facility for soldiers returning from the front and played an important role in medical care at the time. The manor was also briefly in state use during World War II.

Cultural events at manor house

After the war, the property remained in private ownership for generations but was increasingly used for cultural and film purposes. It became well-known as a filming location for the movie "Atonement" starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. The magnificent rooms and authentic Victorian ambiance made it the perfect setting for the award-winning literary adaptation.

Stopped at the cafe on A49 due to heavy traffic caused by a steam tractor traveling at 2 miles per hour. Had a coffee and a snack, which were satisfying. The cheese scone received a rating of 8 out of 10.

Stokesay Court, a privately owned property, frequently opens its gardens for the open gardens day in support of the churches trust. The house occasionally offers tours, so check the website for open days. The estate, used in the filming of the movie Atonement 2007, offers beautiful house and grounds for visitors to explore.

Visited to watch an outdoor performance in ideal grounds. Convenient but standard portable toilets available. Good car park, but directions through the main entrance involve using a field for access.
